"I don't know how much tax I'm supposed to pay, and I'm worried I'll miss something and get penalised by IRD."
"I get IRD letters about provisional tax and assessments and I'm never sure whether I've understood them correctly."
"GST is due every two months and I'm always doing it at the last minute, guessing what I can claim."
How we help with tax and GST
Annual income tax returns — For individuals, sole traders, Uber and delivery drivers, companies, trusts and partnerships. We prepare the return from your Xero file or records, check every deduction you are entitled to is claimed, and file through the tax agent channel, which for most clients means later filing deadlines than filing on your own.
GST returns — Monthly, two-monthly or six-monthly. We reconcile the bank, code each transaction, calculate the GST payable or refundable and file it on time, so late-filing penalties are simply not a thing you worry about.
Provisional tax and tax payments — We tell you in advance what is due and when, so tax is a planned payment, not a shock.
IRD correspondence — As your tax agent we can deal with Inland Revenue directly on your behalf: assessments, letters, payment arrangements, penalties. You forward the letter; we handle it.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a tax return cost in Auckland? At Optimal Accountants a personal income tax return is from $700 +GST, and a company or trust annual accounts and tax return is from $900 +GST. GST returns are from $110 per period +GST. The fee is fixed and confirmed in writing before we start, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.
Do I have to register for GST? Yes, once your turnover from taxable activity reached $60,000 (excluding GST) in the last 12 months, or you expect it to reach $60,000 in the next 12 months. Below that, registration is voluntary. Voluntary registration can let you claim GST on your costs but adds regular filing, so it is worth running the numbers first.
How often do I file GST returns? The common filing cycles are monthly, two-monthly and six-monthly, and you choose at registration. Which suits you depends on turnover and cash flow rhythm — a six-monthly cycle means fewer returns, a shorter cycle means smaller, more frequent payments. We help you pick and we file each one on time.
Do Uber drivers and people doing side jobs need to file a tax return? Yes. Income from Uber, deliveries, contracting or cash jobs is self-employed income and must be declared even if the platform did not deduct tax. The flip side is that vehicle, phone and other costs directly related to earning that income can be claimed under IRD's rules, and we make sure they are.
What is the advantage of filing through a tax agent? An IRD-registered tax agent can deal with Inland Revenue on your behalf, and clients of a tax agent are generally given later filing deadlines than people filing on their own. In practice it means we track the due dates, handle the letters, and you are not doing tax at midnight before a deadline.
