Company and trust compliance in Auckland — annual accounts, tax return and Companies Office filing, one fixed fee from $900 +GST
Registering a company or setting up a family trust is the easy part. Every year after that there are financial statements to prepare, a tax return to file, a Companies Office annual return to lodge and trust records to keep. We do all of it as one package, in English or Mandarin, led by Ted Liang, Chartered Accountant (CA ANZ), through an IRD-registered tax agent.

"I registered the company two years ago and I honestly don't know what I was supposed to file since."
"I pay myself from the company account whenever I need money. Is that a problem?"
"Our family trust owns the house and a rental. Nobody has done a trust return or minutes for years."
How we help companies and trusts
Annual financial statements and tax return — from $900 +GST — A profit and loss, balance sheet and the company or trust income tax return, prepared from Xero and filed through the tax agent channel.
Shareholder and director matters — Shareholder salary, dividends, the shareholder current account (money you have taken out or put in), and how each choice shows up on your personal return, explained before year-end rather than after.
Companies Office annual return — Lodged on time each year so the company stays in good standing on the register.
Trust records — Annual accounts, the trust tax return, and the distribution resolutions and records a trustee is expected to keep, so the trust holds up if anyone ever asks.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an accountant cost for a small company in Auckland? At Optimal Accountants, annual financial statements and the company tax return are from $900 +GST, with the Companies Office annual return included in the package. If the company is GST-registered, GST returns are from $110 per period +GST. The fee is fixed and confirmed in writing before we start.
What does a New Zealand company have to file every year? Three things at minimum: annual financial statements, an income tax return with Inland Revenue, and an annual return with the Companies Office confirming directors, shareholders and addresses. If the company is GST-registered it also files GST returns on its cycle, and if it has staff, payroll filings. We handle all of these.
Does a family trust need to file a tax return? If the trust earns income — rent, interest, dividends, business profit — it needs annual accounts and a trust tax return, and trustees should keep distribution resolutions and records each year. Many trusts set up years ago have been silent since; we bring them up to date and keep them there.
Can I take money out of my company whenever I like? Money you draw goes through your shareholder current account, and at year-end it must be dealt with as salary, dividend or a loan to you, each with a different tax result. It is not a problem if it is planned; it becomes one when it is discovered at year-end. We map this out with you in advance.
I have just registered a company — what do I need to do next? Set up a business bank account and Xero, decide whether to register for GST (compulsory once turnover reaches $60,000 in 12 months), and agree how you will pay yourself. Book the free 15-minute consultation and we will walk through the first-year checklist with you in English or Mandarin.
